Gábor Sipos was born in 1967 in Budapest. He began his violin studies at the age of 7 under Erzsébet Skultéty. He studied at the Béla Bartók Conservatory from 1982, and in 1986 he moved on to the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, where he studied violin under Natasa Csernogolovkia and chamber music under Sándor Devich, András Mihály, György Kurtág and Ferenc Rados. He has attended master classes held by György Pauk, Lóránt Fenyves, Endre Wold and Tibor Varga. He won recognition at the 1991 Hubay Violin Competition in Budapest, the same year he graduated as an arts teacher. He has been a member of the Budapest Festival Orchestra since 2005, having previously been with the orchestra from 1989 to 1995. He is a founding member of the Auer String Quartet, and regularly attends the master classes of the world-renowned Amadeus Quartet with them since 1991. He also won an international quartet competition in Evian in 1993 and in London in 1997 with the quartet. He won the Liszt Prize in 2000 and an Artisjus Award in 2004. He has also been a member of the Eckhardt String Quartet since 2006.
In 2017, he received the Sándor Végh Prize for his recital of John Corigliano’s Red Violin Concerto.
